Brussels (no sprouts)

On the first of February we woke up and said goodbye to Carys. We were off to our next location : Brussels! We had looked at hostels the night before however all of them were quite pricey so we found a place on booking.com just a train ride away from the city called ‘the beautiful white house’. What we didn’t realise is that upon arriving at the station, it was a 30 minute walk, and as newbies to backpacking we weren’t yet adjusted to the weight of walking with them on us. So it took us possibly around an hour to get there due to the many stops and rests we took. However we finally got to our accommodation and found it was actually a room in some families house? It felt slightly strange however they were lovely people and their son was very playful so we didn’t feel too uncomfortable. We dropped our bags off and then walked back to the station, now bag free, to do a little day trip to Brussels.

As a capital city, you could definitely spend a few days there however, me and Ben felt that the day trip was enough as it was very busy and not as picturesque as our previous place. We made sure to see all the main sights such as the Manneken Pis, Mont des arts, the Music Museum building, the Palace and the Grand-Place. Once we had seen everything we wanted to, we decided to head back to get some rest (very important when travelling!) as the next day we were moving on once again.

My opinion of Belgium was that i definitely preferred Bruges over Brussels but it’s all personal preference. I enjoyed how peaceful Bruges was, whereas Brussels is your typical city. However it’s a good place to tick off since it is the capital, so if you have time definitely check it out.

MUST SEE’s:

  • Grand-Place
  • Manneken Pis
  • Royal Palace
  • Mont des arts
  • Atomium
