Bled-y Beautiful!

17th February –

On my rough route one of my absolute no brainers was to go to Lake Bled in Slovenia. I’d seen so many photos of it and thought it was so magical and photogenic. So, that was where we were headed next, Bled!

Our journey didn’t go quite to plan as setting off from Trieste we were stopped at a random place. From there we had to catch a rail replacement bus and it was so confusing and stressful…but we did it. Due to this, we arrived in Bled much later than expected. Luckily our friend Yasmin that we met in Como was also in Bled! What are the chances! She had rented a car for her stay there so agreed to pick us up from the station and take us to our accommodation. Thank god because I don’t think I would have made that journey with my bag on. Honestly, making friends in hostels isn’t just rewarding in the fact you have company for your stay, but also who knows, you may bump into them again!

We stayed at a lovely booking.com property called Villa Alpina and got settled in straight away. The owner ,Peter, was amazing. So helpful and the next morning he greeted us and gave us maps which he wrote tons of recommendations on. Big shout out to Peter!

We woke up, piled on tons of layers as it was freezing, and went to walk around the lake. It was serene. It’s a 90 minute walk around the whole lake and there’s little points along the way which enhances your time there too. At one point you come across a coffee shop called Launge Bar Zaka where we stopped off and fed some ducks. They were super friendly ducks, however none wanted to come home with me. I’m not sure if it was due to it being so close to Valentine’s day but there was even a massive heart with a little box full of notes and a board where you could write down what you love and put in. As you get to the main town of Bled there’s two bicycles which two people can ride to power up a LED swan aswell. We strolled around Bled before continuing our walk to our accommodation. Peter advised us to try the very famous Bled cake, which unfortunately we didn’t but it did look super yummy so I definitely recommend it.

We did much of the same, wondering straight to Bled instead of around the whole lake, visiting little souvenir shops and taking in all the scenery. It’s a gorgeous place, albeit not much to do other than walking around the lake and exploring Bled Castle which is further up a hilly bit.

To make this day even more perfect, we ordered a Maccies delivery (It’s a cultural must to visit every countries Maccies). Our luck must have been brilliant as we got free doughnuts too! They were so good! I’ve never had a doughnut from Maccies but they are like heaven!

20th February –

This day we began our walk back to the station, but since we had quite a bit of time till our train, we sat down along the lake and admired the view for a bit before. Little did we know, our travel day was about to become very stressful.

Lake Bled is such a must see, it’s stunning and you can even get a boat ride to the island and visit the church in the middle. While we were there we heard the bell going off tons and found out that’s because it’s well known that you ring the bell for luck. Definitely do not miss this place on your travels!

MUST DO’s:

  • Walk around the lake
  • Try Bled cake
  • Get a boat across the lake to The church of the Mother of the God on the lake and ring the bell
  • Visit Bled Castle
  • Relax and take in the impressive view
