You guessed it, the travel day did not go as planned. I mean, three months interrailing, things are never gonna go smoothly the whole time. We found out that our train had now changed to a coach. So the 8hour journey was now gonna be even longer. Or so we thought.
On the 21st of February we were met with the sad fact that we would not be on a luxury train or even a train at all. We were now bus-ing it. However we were pleasantly surprised in the end. At first Ben was very worried as for an 8 hour trip there was no toilet on the coach. But little did we know, the driver was a smoker and so we had three service station stops in total for him to smoke and us to wee and buy food. Thank the lord. It also came to light that because we were on a bus, we only had a few stops so the journey actually ended up being quicker! It was so nice to realise we wouldn’t be sat there for over 8 hours.
When we got to Split it was decently late and so walked straight to our accommodation. Another booking.com place called Jagoda Palace for £16.70 a night. We chose this room based on the fact it had a pool…but we soon realised we should have prioritised other things over a pool.
The room was lovely and so spacious. We had a TV, a sofa, a kettle and a bathroom. It felt like our own apartment. We idealised that Split would be sunny and warm so decided to book 14 nights there. This was due to the fact we had gone super fast with the first leg of our trip and if we kept going at the same rate, we would be done within the next month!
We got very excited about the bath and so we attempted to have a bubble bath, however little did we know the hot water tank was not that extensive. So the idea was quickly dismissed upon feeling the temperature drop dramatically before the tub was anywhere near full.
22nd February –
We had a pretty chilled morning and then went for a walk along the beach, I believe Split isn’t known for luscious golden sand beaches and that showed. However, it was still nice and excited us nonetheless. We also did a little bit of a food shop since we would be staying there a while.
We soon realised mistake number 1 of prioritising a pool : no washing facilities. We resulted to filling the bath tub and pouring in some washing powder to wash our clothes. Definitely a brain altering moment.
Since it was a Saturday we felt obliged to go check out the nightlife in the area. We started off with some cheap and cheerful rosè in the comfort of our abode and then headed to the beach where we had seen a decent looking club. We were drawn in by the flashing lights and music, however quickly turned away upon realising it wasn’t a ‘night’ club. Oh no, it was a motorcycle club. Big give away was all the guys in their leather jackets.
We headed more into the main town and got a drink at a place nearby before it reached 10:30 when Boiler club opened. It was a super awesome club, probably one of the most impressive looking we had both ever seen. The walls were filled with grey goose bottles, the music was banging and it all felt so futuristic. The only let down was that obviously it was off season and so it was very quiet and not at all active so we did leave when it got to 12am.
23rd February –
We wandered around the old town, exploring the markets and watching the world go by. Our mission was to find a barbers for Ben but we forgot it was Sunday and so most places were closed.
When we got back we realised mistake number 2 of prioritising the pool : it was freezing. I suppose outdoor pools rely on the sun to heat them…and we weren’t exactly in the heat of summer. No pool for us.
24th February –
Slowly we began to realise, Split could be a drag. Not much to do at all and no sights to see. We spent the day lounging around while i forced Ben to play roblox with me. I’m a big kid at heart.
25th February-
A very detrimental event happened. My trainers were broken. The plastic on the heel was fully out and cutting into my foot. So i had to go to the mall and buy some new ones, what a shame…we just had to go to a shopping centre hehe. We went in every shoe shop to compare prices and also to kill time before i eventually bought myself some new, identical, new balance trainers.
26th February-
Slowly starting to lose our minds we spent most of our time chilling and gaming. We did venture out and found a barbers for Ben to get a haircut to feel a bit more productive which had a bit of a cufuffle when we were told it was cash only. After they finished. But luckily there was an ATM and they were super chill about it too.
27th February-
Today was super exciting because Cam and Scarlett were arriving! We felt like we had been saved from our boredom and life was worth living again.
That night we went to their accommodation which made us realise ours was not as amazing as we liked to think. They had a whole flat! Kitchen, Netflix, washing machine! We bought some drinks, chatted for ages and then got a takeaway delivered from Submarine Burger. THE BEST. If you’re in Split please try it! The Salchipapas fries and Smokehouse Burger is out of this world!
We played charades with them and also gamed on a joint Minecraft world together for a little while before heading back to our place, 5 minute walk, to bed down.
28th February-
We resulted to hiding away for the day like vampires as Ben was terribly hungover. We did go down to the beach for a little walk and sit but all in all, the world was too bright for poor little Benny.
1 March-
We met up with Cam and Scarlett again and wandered around the old town for a while. Then we let our legs lead and eventually began ascending up a million stairs. Scarlett and I were dying so we got a lovely free ride on our boyfriend’s backs. We reached a park where we sat on the see saw for a while, witnessed a strange guy sat on a bench backwards and then continued to climb even more stairs. We reached the top, known as Telegrin Peak, and looked out over the city for a while. After our huge hike, we went back down, got a snack and headed back.
Later on, at around 9pm we all met back up and went on a long walk along all the beaches and sea side. It was a great day and very productive in comparison to the rest of our time in Split.
2 March-
We all went down to the beach and watched the boys jump into the sea for a while before quickly retaliating due to the baltic temperature of the water (not colder than our paddling pond of a pool!) It was a lovely day for it as the sun was out and provided an adequate level of warmth.
That night we went back out again all together for our last night. We sat on the pier and watched an epic sunset before heading back to their place to have some food.
Mistake number 3 of prioritising a pool : we only had a kettle. Due to this we were living off slices of bread and butty meat two times a day. Luckily Cam and Scarlett had a kitchen and so, that night Ben and I cooked 1kg of Pasta. We had a little bowl for tea but saved the rest in little tubs to get us through the final days of Split. Call us Einstein.
Once again we played some minecraft and then as night rolled in, we said our goodbyes. We made plans to meet up again back in the UK which hopefully we will.
3rd March-
We chilled for a lot of the day, went out for another little wander and of course, bought the all important magnet.
4th March-
You guessed it! More aimless wandering. Luckily the weather was picking up which always makes everything better. We also visited some little shops to fill the time.
5th March-
We went on a little day trip to Solin where ruins from the Roman times are and walked around for quite some time. It was super interesting to read all about each bit and a nice change from the repetitiveness of wandering Old Town every. single. day. I made Ben a beautiful daisy chain crown which he looked gorgeous in, however he soon discarded it…how rude.
6th March-
As it was our penultimate night in Split we decided to celebrate with a nice meal out. We went to a place called Terminal F and had some gorgeous food. I had a Mango Prawn bowl and Ben got a Pizza. It was so yummy and a lovely end to a very long stop.
7th March-
The weather was beautiful for our final day and we spent much of it at the beach. We found a ball to use to attempt to play a game which all the locals were playing called Picigin. It was super fun and it felt so nice to be paddling in the sea. However our fun was ended when a lady asked for her ball back, oops! We thought it was just a forgotten ball…lost and looking for passer bys to entertain themselves.
When we got back to our place, Ben decided to have a bubble bath. Long story short, the bubbles didn’t stop growing and soon, he was not visible and the bathroom was practically full of bubbles. It was crazy! After the bubble palava we packed up and got ourselves psyched for the travel tomorrow and continuation of our adventure.
Split is a lovely area however during off season there isn’t much to do. The old town is nice to wander but apart from that there isn’t actually any ‘sights’. In summer i imagine it being amazing with beach and boat parties galore and just chillaxing on the beach all day. If you’re interrailing in off season I’d possibly say to miss it out as it’s so much better in warm weather.
THINGS TO DO:
- Play Picigin
- Day trip to Krka Waterfalls
- See all the cats on the street
- Watch the sunset
- Stroll the beaches
- Explore old town
