Copen in Hagen

11 April –

We arrived in Copenhagen at around 7:30. We went to the bar in the hostel and had some drinks. The hostel was called Steel House (£_ a night) and it had an amazing interior and facilities. However it does charge extra to use the kitchen and things like the pool and gym. This was a slight let down as we hadn’t come across this yet so we accepted the fate of sandwiches for the next few days. It also hosts a lot of families which was slightly strange since it’s a hostel but i suppose it resembles a hotel more. Later we got back to our space pod like dorm and settled in for a comfortable night.

Another day of reaching over 20,000 steps as we wandered around Copenhagen. We went on an Aimee guided tour where we saw all the main sights. Torvehallerne KBH (a food market where flea markets also take place), The botanical gardens, Rosenborg castle, Kastellet, The little mermaid statue, Frederick’s church, Amalienborg Palace and my personal favourite Nyhavn. Nyhavn is the most iconic street of Copenhagen as it’s well known for the colourful houses along the canal. I described it as Balamory, but my reference was lost on Ben. We enjoyed the crazy difference of lovely Copenhagen to the streets of Berlin and took a leisurely pace enjoying all the pretty trees and

Waking up felt impossible. For some reason neither me nor Ben had any energy. Every move we made felt like an impossible task and so we decided to stay in and ditch our original plan for the day. We lounged around, had a lovely dry sandwich and then conceded to walk to Lidl to get some other food. Lidl bakery is actually a saviour for backpackers, the pizza pastry thingys are just too good. We went back to chilling in our pods and watched an episode of The Walking dead. Despite all I wanted to do was sleep, Ben is a massive water baby and decided the pool was calling his name. As the brilliant girlfriend i am, I used all of my non existing energy to fulfil his dreams, in return for him making me a hot chocolate afterwards. The pool was just too cold for me so we spent around 30 minutes in there then got out due to me freezing and kids playing in the pool so space being very limited. Once warm and showered, Ben lovingly made me a hot choccy and i snuggled up, relishing in the comfort of my duvet.

Our final day and definitely the best of our whole time here. We walked 30 minutes from our hostel to Freetown Christiana. A small hippie community formed in the 70’s by squatters where they abide by their own laws. It was such a surreal place as it almost felt like a set from The Walking Dead. Every building was so colourful and decorated in amazing graffiti. We sat down in ‘Nemoland’ and Ben got a beer while we chatted for a bit and just admired this fictional feel of a place.

We then had another 30 minute walk to Reffen, however along the way we found two rent a bikes by Donkey Republic. Mine was called Ellie and Ben’s was called Esther. For 5 DKK a minute we splashed out and biked our way there. Reffen is a super cool food market, with over 20 different stalls from 20 different countries. We considered our options as we walked around and got free tasters at the African stall, my goodness it was LUSH, and the Indian stall. The taster we had made our decision super easy as the butter chicken sauce was divine. We both ordered the buttermilk chicken and naan which came to 125 DKK and sat on the beach area to eat. The beach area is also full of deck chairs and fire pits where you can relax and enjoy the vibey Jamaican music as you munch.

After our amazing food, we biked all the way back to our hostel, feeling on top of the world. A great end to our time in Copenhagen. We then had a chill before packing our bags to leave for our final days of the adventure.
